What Is PartialObjects.com?
You probably don’t believe everything you read, hear or see in news, culture and advertising, but maybe you don’t know why. This is the place to go to find out. Partial Objects is a user-driven community blog that articulates the underlying biases, assumptions, and frames of mainstream politics, culture and media.
Don’t Other People Do This Sort of Thing?
Not really. While deconstruction is something of a sport among the under-40 set, sites that do it full-time have their own frames and inherent assumptions. They may not be aware of them, but they are there. Other community driven sites do this haphazardly, but in a way that either buries thoughtful writing under mountains of oh-so-clever sarcasm and one-liners, or that rewards consensus of opinion rather than diversity. People say they’ll defend to the death your right to say something they disagree with, but they’ll never upvote or retweet it.
So What Makes This Place Different?
You. If everyone sees things from different angles, within different frames, and reads different messages-within-messages, the only way to get see it all is to have everyone’s input. To encourage rich discussion with a diversity of opinion, we decided early on that the blog should not be written by us, but rather by the users. Any user can post links and articles to the front page, and any user can comment. Registration is currently free, but this will change soon.
What Should I Post?
Your insightful analysis, interpretation, critique or deconstruction of some aspect of culture, media, or politics along with relevant links. Posts that focus on interpretations of pop culture, “high culture,” art, music, film, television, literature or new media such as video games and social media such as Facebook, Twitter are preferred, but not required. It doesn’t matter how mainstream or alternatively how avant garde the content of the links are, what matters most is your insight into that content. Posts do not have to be long, but they should have a well-developed point.
If you have an interesting perspective on an image, article, or video clip that you’d like to share, go ahead and post it to the front page.
The rules are simple. Think before you hit “Submit”. Be courteous and respectful. Make an argument, state an opinion, have a point. Use snark and sarcasm sparingly. Criticize the argument, not the person making it. We reserve the right to suspend or ban users for spam, hostility, excessive rudeness, and general naughtiness.
